Strapping

Automatic strapping machines from Whittaker Packaging Solutions

An automatic strapping machine takes the strap-and-seal job off your operators completely. You feed the carton in, the machine straps it, and the operator moves on. Whittaker Packaging Solutions supplies automatic strapping machines configured for Australian production lines, with the install, training and ongoing service to back them.

WPS focuses on machines that are reliable in shift work and easy for a maintenance team to keep running. Not the cheapest catalogue import, not the most exotic European unit. The middle ground that works.

Why WPS

Why choose an automatic strapping machine from Whittaker Packaging Solutions

Most operations move to automatic strapping because they've outgrown a semi-auto bench: the throughput is there, labour is hard to find, and inconsistent tension is showing up as damaged stock.

We've spent years installing automatic strapping machines into food, FMCG, logistics and manufacturing sites. We know which models hold up under three-shift running and which aren't built for the volume the brochure suggests.

We also size the machine to the line. Oversizing the arch wastes money and floor space. Undersizing it means a daily fight with oddly-shaped loads. We measure properly before recommending.

How an automatic strapping machine works

An automatic strapping machine threads, tensions, seals and cuts the strap without an operator touching the strap itself. There are two common configurations.

Inline automatic, fitted onto a conveyor. Cartons run through and get strapped on the move. Ideal for high-volume despatch and case packing lines.

Stand-alone automatic with a sensor-triggered arch. Operator places the carton, the cycle fires automatically, the operator removes it.

Both share the same core mechanics. Strap sits in the arch on a thin track. When triggered, the machine releases the strap, tensions it around the load, and seals the overlap (usually with a heated platen), then re-loads the arch for the next cycle.

Cycle times on the WPS automatic strapping machine range start around 1.5 seconds for a small carton and scale up from there.

Choosing the right automatic strapping machine

A few questions decide the model:

Throughput.

Straps per minute at peak, not average.

Load size.

Smallest and largest carton or bundle you need to strap. The arch has to accommodate the largest comfortably without wasting cycle time on the smallest.

Strap material and width.

Most automatic strapping machines run 5mm to 12mm PP strap. Heavier-duty variants run wider PET.

Conveyor integration.

Are you adding to an existing line, or buying a stand-alone unit?

Footprint.

Arch machines need clearance above and around them. We confirm fit before quoting.

Seal reliability matters too. A poorly tuned heated seal is the most common reason an automatic strapping machine causes line stops. We commission the seal settings during install and document them for your maintenance team.

FAQs

Common questions

An automatic strapping machine threads, tensions, seals and cuts the strap around a carton or load without the operator handling the strap. The Whittaker Packaging Solutions automatic strapping machine range covers stand-alone arch units and inline conveyor-fed models.
