Carton & tape

Water activated tape machines from Whittaker Packaging Solutions

A water activated tape machine (WAT machine, sometimes called a gummed tape dispenser) cuts and activates kraft paper tape on demand, ready to apply to a carton seam. Whittaker Packaging Solutions supplies and supports water activated tape machines for e-commerce fulfilment, food packaging, heavy carton sealing and any application where a tamper-evident, recyclable seal matters.

Water activated tape bonds with the corrugated carton fibres rather than sitting on the surface like plastic tape. The result: a stronger seal that uses less tape per carton, a recyclable closure that doesn't need peeling off for kerbside recycling, and a clear tamper-evident finish.

WPS sells WAT machines under our own brand and supports them with parts and service from our South East Queensland and Melbourne hubs.

Why WPS

Why move to water activated tape with Whittaker Packaging Solutions

Most pack rooms only think about tape when they run out of it. The switch to water activated tape is usually triggered by one of three things: a customer demand for recyclable packaging, freight damage from weak seals, or a tape spend that's quietly climbed too high.

Our advice is based on what the machine actually does on your line, independent of consumable margin. When we say a WAT machine will cut your tape spend per carton by 30 to 50%, that's physics: one strip instead of two or three to hold a heavy carton. If your application doesn't suit WAT, we'll tell you that too.

What we'll talk you through before quoting

Whether your cartons suit WAT (some coated boards don't bond well)

Activated tape width: 60mm, 70mm, 76mm typical

Reinforced versus plain kraft tape

Manual dispenser versus electronic dispenser versus inline WAT head on an automatic sealer

Tape consumption and storage requirements

How a water activated tape machine works

The basic principle is simple. A roll of gummed kraft tape feeds through the machine, passes a wetting mechanism that activates the starch-based adhesive, and is cut to a pre-set length ready for the operator to apply.

The variations matter

Manual WAT dispenser.

Operator pulls a length, machine wets and cuts. Suits low volumes or back-up stations.

Electronic WAT dispenser.

Operator presses a button or sensor, machine dispenses a pre-set length, wets and cuts automatically. The standard pack-bench unit. Handles 5 to 12 cartons per minute comfortably.

Inline WAT head.

Replaces the plastic tape head on an automatic carton sealer. Suits higher-volume lines that want the WAT benefits without slowing throughput.

Most pack-bench WAT dispensers handle a wide tape width range, allow programmable tape lengths for different carton sizes, and store dozens of pre-set lengths for fast SKU changeover.

Choosing

Choosing the right WAT machine

The WPS team asks for:

Cartons per day at the pack bench

Average carton size and weight

Whether you need reinforced (filament) tape for heavy cartons

Tape width preference

Bench layout and operator workflow

Whether you want a single dispenser or one per pack station

Whether the machine is replacing manual taping, plastic tape, or an existing WAT unit

Switching from plastic tape, factor in the tape cost difference (WAT costs more per metre, but you use much less per carton), the recyclability angle, and the seal strength improvement.

FAQs

Common questions

A water activated tape machine, or WAT machine, dispenses, wets and cuts gummed kraft paper tape ready for sealing cartons. The activated tape bonds with the carton fibres for a stronger, recyclable seal compared to standard plastic tape. Whittaker Packaging Solutions supplies manual, electronic and inline WAT machines for pack benches and automatic carton sealing lines.
